Shingles (Herpes Zoster) FAQ — Don’t Miss the Early Signs

What are the early signs of shingles?

Shingles often begins with tingling, burning, or pain in a specific area of skin — usually on one side of the body. A blistering rash typically appears 2–3 days later. Early treatment within 72 hours of rash onset is critical.

Can Korean Medicine help with shingles?

Yes. During the acute phase, Korean Medicine can work alongside antiviral medication to manage pain and inflammation. After the acute phase, Korean Medicine is particularly effective for post-herpetic neuralgia — the nerve pain that can persist for months or years.

What is post-herpetic neuralgia?

Nerve pain that continues after the shingles rash has healed. It can be burning, stabbing, or electric-shock-like. Risk increases with age and delayed treatment. Korean Medicine addresses the underlying nerve inflammation and immune recovery.

Who is at risk for shingles?

Anyone who has had chickenpox. Risk increases with age (especially after 50), stress, immune suppression, and chronic fatigue. The varicella-zoster virus reactivates when immunity drops.

Can shingles be prevented?

The Shingrix vaccine significantly reduces risk. Korean Medicine also supports immune maintenance through herbal medicine and lifestyle management to help prevent reactivation.
